Joy Global: Primed for a Short Squeeze

It’s not quite love, but at least JPMorgan is considering the potential upside in Joy Global (JOY), one of the market’s least love stocks, next week when it releases earnings.

Euro Steady Above $1.33 Ahead Of Fed Meeting

The euro traded steadily above $1.33 on Tuesday as Europe prepared for the US Federal Reserve's two day meeting.

Despite recent poor data, the common currency got a boost over the weekend when Lawrence Summers dropped out as a candidate for Federal Reserve Chairman. Summers was rumored to be President Obama's first choice to replace Ben Bernanke, however widespread criticism caused him to withdraw from the race.

The euro's gains from Summers' resignation are likely to be short lived, as more data from the eurozone on Monday signaled that the region was not yet out of the woods. Data showed that workers' pay within the bloc rose by less than the rate of inflation, which will put pressure on consumer spending. However some eurozone leaders see the falling wages as a good sign which signals growing competitiveness.

Mario Draghi spoke on Monday in Berlin about the dire need for a centralized banking union within the bloc, saying that the union would help support a faster recovery. A recent meeting of the minds between eurozone policy makers ended without any forward progress on the union, and with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble claiming the current proposal violates the EU treaty.

Bloomberg reported that Draghi considers the eurozone's return to growth in the second quarter as fragile and "in its infancy". He said that given the current conditions, the ECB will keep interest rates constant. In his opinion, the threat of a major breakdown has passed and now it is up to individual governments to address their budget gaps and fiscal health.

This means that their results shall be severely damaged by a steep depreciation of the local currency. A good example of a bank that is easy to short from the US (since it trades in the New York Stock Exchange) is the Westpac Banking Corporation (WBK). Westpac generates 90% of its revenues domestically and sells for 2014 13.1 times earnings and 2.1 times its 2014 expected book value. That said, there is one problem that you will find when you short Westpac's shares: The bank pays a +5% cash dividend yield.

How Much Economic Bang for a Gasoline Dollar?

Since reaching a peak of more than 3 trillion miles driven in 2007, the number of miles driven in the U.S. has fallen by 2.9% to around 2.95 trillion miles driven. That works out to about 48 million barrels of gasoline that U.S. drivers not longer burn. What does the U.S. get for all that gasoline?

Professor Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has recently completed a study of how much economic impact all that driving creates. Using GDP figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and mileage data from the Federal Highway Administration, he has computed the amount of GDP generated per mile driven for each of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia.

In 2011, the "state" with the highest GDP per distance driven was the District of Columbia, which generated $30.04 in GDP for every mile driven. Alaska was second with $11.16, followed by New York ($9.16), Connecticut ($7.23), and Delaware ($7.13).

The least economic bang per mile driven was generated in Mississippi ($2.51), followed by Alabama ($2.75), New Mexico ($3.12), Arkansas ($3.23), and Oklahoma ($3.29). The median GDP was $4.66 per mile driven in Wisconsin.

Calculated as a percentage increase from 1997 to 2011, the state with the largest growth in GDP per mile driven was Wyoming (+115%), followed by the District of Columbia (+99%), North Dakota (+95%), Alaska (+94%), and Oregon (+89%). The states posting the least growth were Michigan (+28%), Florida (+32%), Ohio (+36%), Mississippi (+37%), and New Jersey (+42%).

As Professor Sivak points out, a high GDP per mile driven can be a function either of high GDP or low miles driven. High GDP may be a function of natural resources (Wyoming, Alaska, North Dakota, for example), local tax policies, availability of a skilled work force (New York and Connecticut), or other factors. Lower driving distances may be influenced by more compact urban areas and the locations of large employers.

Perhaps an unexpected conclusion is related to the size of the state and its population density:

[W]hile the direction of the effect of density of population was in the expected direction (high population density was associated with high level of GDP per distance driven), the effect of land area was the opposite of what was expected (large land area was associated with high level of GDP per distance driven).

Professor Sivak also noted that since 1997 inflation in the U.S. is up by 40%. That means that the four states with the smallest increases in GDP per distance driven did not even keep up with inflation.

Records fell on Wall Street Friday as another solid report on housing lifted the market for the second day in a row. There's a three-day weekend coming up -- something that often prompts investor caution -- but the gains were broad-based even though volume was fairly light. The VIX, which measures volatility, fell to its lowest level this year. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) gained 63 points, the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 31, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 8, topping the record high set last week. The Dow Transportation average also raced to an all-time high, lifted by airline stocks. United (UAL) soared more than 4 percent; Delta (DAL) gained more than 1 percent and Southwest (LUV) gained 2 percent. Southwest is at an all-time high, up 79 percent from a year ago. New home sales bounced back with a better than expected 6.4 percent increase last month. Lennar (LEN) and D.R. Horton (DHI) both rose 4 percent. Pulte (PHM), Beazer (BZH) and Hovnanian (HOV) also solid posted gains. Earnings continue to drive retail stocks. Gap (GPS) edged higher even though net fell. Foot Locker (FL) gained 1½ percent after topping expectations. GameStop (GME) rose 4 percent. Its net rose, helped by the rollout last year of new Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Zumiez (ZUMZ) rose 5½ percent on an earnings beat. But Aeropostale (ARO) tumbled 24 percent. Its loss widened and sales declined. The retailer continues to struggle with teen fashion trends. Also on the earnings front, TiVo (TIVO) rose 2 percent as it swung to a profit from a year ago loss. It also reported an increase in the number of subscribers. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) rose 6 percent on news the company plans to eliminate up to 16,000 additional workers in an effort to cut costs. And several stocks extended big moves from yesterday. Best Buy (BBY) rose more than 3 percent for the second straight day after earnings beat expectations. Isis Pharmaceuticals (ISIS) jumped another 11 percent. And RetailMeNot (SALE) dropped another 6 percent thanks to a report that its coupon site has lost about one-third of its traffic following changes to Google's search algorithms. But the company says the report grossly overstates the impact of the Google change. Finally, PTC Therapeutics (PTCT) soared 32 percent after winning conditional EU approval for its treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Electric cycles, bikes and 'tuks' get traction

Despite America's love affair with Harley-Davidsons, electric motorcycles — as well as e-bicycles — are revving up U.S. sales.

Two-wheeled e-vehicles are gaining converts among urban commuters and law enforcement, which see a stealth advantage in their quietness. More than three dozen U.S. police departments nationwide now use e-motorcycles.

Sales of high-performance e-motorcycles will rise at least 30% per year through 2023 in North America, says a May report by Navigant Research, a market research firm. Co-author John Gartner sees several reasons: consumers looking for refuge from high gasoline prices, increases in city traffic and improved e-vehicles.

"It has its limitations. It only goes so far" on a charge, says Ron Paci, a retired carpenter in Arlington, Va., who has owned an electric Zero Motorcycle for a year. Still, he's a huge fan. "it doesn't pollute. It doesn't make any noise so if you want to drive quietly along a country road, it's a new experience."

Zero, the largest U.S. manufacturer of e-motorcycles, has boosted production from fewer than 100 units in 2010 to more than 2,000 this year, says Scott Harden, the company's vice president of marketing. Compared to gas-powered counterparts, he says Zeros are cheaper to operate — about a penny per mile — and don't make noise, fumes or vibrations.

"It's almost a magic-carpet-like ride," Harden says, noting Zeros can go 171 miles per charge in the city. He's bullish about future sales, because battery prices — accounting for half of production costs — have fallen in the last year. Zeros cost $10,000 to $17,000.

E-motorcycles sell best in the San Francisco Bay area, southern California, Florida and Texas, says Adrian Stewart, director of marketing for Oregon-based Brammo, which rolled out its first model in 2009.

The U.S. market faces increased competition as BMW launches an e-scooter this year, and Yamaha plans an electric entry in 2016.

Also on the way are three-wheeled electric tuk-tuks, vehicles without sides that have canopies and are common in Asia. Netherlands-based Tuk Tuk Factory is partnering with eTuk USA, which is seeking road-use approval for three models from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"The interest is unbelievable," says Michael Fox of eTuk USA, noting Atlanta's airport plans to use one of the units for mobile food sales. He says hungry passengers waiting for flights won't have to leave their gate, because the tuk-tuk will come to them.

E-bikes, though still a small share of all U.S. bicycles, are seeing rapid growth. More than twice as many, 158,000, were imported from July 2012 to July 2013 than a year earlier, when 65,000 entered the U.S. market, according to Edward Benjamin, chairman of the Light Electric Vehicle Association, an industry group. E-bike sales are forecast to increase nearly 10% per year through 2020 in North America, says a 2013 Navigant report.

"If I ride a pedelec up a hill, I feel 18 again," Benjamin, 59, says, referring to a type of e-bike that r! equires r! iders to pedal in order for the motor to run. The more pedaling, the longer a bike's range per charge.

He says e-bike sales are greatest among aging Baby Boomer cyclists who have trouble climbing hills and young urban commuters who don't want to buy a car but want to arrive at work without sweating. He says customers say they aim to avoid traffic jams and parking hassles.

Still, Americans aren't flocking to e-alternatives as quickly as Europeans or Asians.

"We're culturally slow in our adoption," Benjamin says. Unlike Europeans, he says most Americans drive to work and are more apt to see bicycles as a way to exercise rather than commute.

Also, Europeans are more focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and have more dealerships that focus exclusively on e-vehicles, Brammo's Stewart says. And in the U.S., he says there's the Harley-Davidson "phenomenon," adding "the noise and the smell are part of the attraction." He doesn't expect its devotees to switch until e-motorcyles can get 300 miles per charge.

Another hurdle is price. Harleys aside, many gas-combustion motorcycles cost less, and a federal tax incentive for e-vehicles, including motorcycles, expired last year.

Sears Holdings – The Clock Is Ticking for SHLD

Another decline in quarterly revenue came as no surprise when Sears Holdings (SHLD) reported first quarter results on Thursday morning. The retailer has been shedding revenue-bearing properties like Lands’ End (LE) in earnest for about three years now, while simultaneously axing operational stores; 80 more stores have been or will be closed in 2014.

What did come as a surprise is, even while the company is clearly on a path to bankruptcy, CEO Eddie Lampert continues to bang the “turnaround” drum to the few faithful Sears stock holders left.

Folks, it’s over, both for the company and (sooner or later) for SHLD.

It’s not a matter of “if” anymore. It’s just a matter of “when.”

Bankruptcy truly may be on the horizon.

Numbers Don’t Lie

For those who haven’t heard, last quarter, Sears Holdings saw year-over-year sales drop by 6.8%, to $7.88 billion. By retail standards, it was a disaster, although not as disastrous as the much bigger loss the company posted for the first quarter (Sears lost $402 million, vs. $279 million in the year-ago period). More damning: It was the 29th straight quarter of falling revenue.

On a per-share basis, SHLD posted a loss of $3.79 per share, versus a loss of “only” $2.63 in the first quarter of last year.

And yet, Sears stock didn’t do anything like what you’d expect. Following the report, SHLD stock quickly reversed an opening loss and finished with a 4%-plus gain.

The prod for the pop? Everything being relative, investors — some investors — liked the fact that things could have been much worse for Sears Holdings. And those who weren’t impressed by the relative success might have been encouraged by Lampert’s pep-talk. The master of spin once again offered hope, writing in his quarterly letter to shareholders:

“Sears is undergoing a significant transformation, and we fundamentally are changing the way we do business. Our performance in the first quarter highlights the challenges we are facing as well as the progress we are making in this transformation. We are moving away from a company that was heavily based on selling products solely through a store-based network to a member-centric business model focused on providing benefits to our members anytime and anyplace. We are seeing progress in our transformation to a member-centric, integrated retailer, as we continue to invest heavily in driving our Shop Your Way program.”

He used the word “progress” twice, and yet we’ve not actually seen any — in years — where it counts.

He also used the word “transformation” twice, and though one could arguably call Shop Your Way a transformation, the program has yet to actually make any aspect of the business better despite its launch years ago.

It’s time for a reality check.

Reality Check for Sears Stock Fans & Followers

Last quarter, Sears lost $402 million. Over the past 12 months, the company has lost $1.36 billion. Things aren’t getting better on the revenue front. They don’t seem to be getting any better on the earnings front, either.

In fact, SHLD recently dumped one of its few profitable properties when it sold off Lands’ End.

Sears says it’s closing stores that are supposed to be unproductive, but at least some of the units it has been discarding have been its fruitful locations.

If Sears Holdings can’t make a go of it with its top-performing stores and divisions, can it really expect to survive with just the weak ones?

As of the end of the last fiscal quarter, Sears had $831 million in cash. That’s down from $1.028 billion for the fourth quarter of last fiscal year despite the $500 million in cash received from the spinoff of Lands’ End on top of the sale of some of its stores. That trend is pointed in the wrong direction, too.

Sears can tap into the $1.2 billion it has left with its credit facility, which is about a year’s worth of life at the company’s current cash-burn rate. The cash on hand should last a couple more quarters. That’s a total of a year-and-a-half worth of life left before the struggling retailer can’t pay its bills.

It’s conceivable Sears Holdings could get another loan. It’s just not likely, as there’s no hope that it will ever even be able to pay back its existing debt, let alone any new debt. The so-called turnaround has been in place for years. If it hasn’t worked yet, it’s not apt to suddenly start working in mid-2014.

Bottom Line

There aren’t a lot of plausible outcomes here. A complete liquidation of inventory and property is still a possibility, but a fire sale of stores and merchandise would likely mean weak prices for both.

Bankruptcy — though Sears has managed to sidestep that discussion thus far — is becoming a real possibility, too.

A white knight with a bag full of cash might be able to step and stave off the complete annihilation of the 128-year-old name, but most likely such a buyer would only be willing to purchase Sears Holdings it at a steep discount to the value the market seems to be assigning Sears stock now.

Whichever of those outcomes takes shape, none of them are actually winners for current SHLD stock holders.

It looks like the beginning of the end.

The United States is overflowing with oil. In fact, the Energy Information Administration thinks the country could realistically produce 6 million to 8 million barrels of oil per day over the next three decades. The institution's high estimate exceeds 10 million barrels per day. Canadian production isn't doing too bad, either, although supporting infrastructure is less developed for our northerly neighbors. That bodes well for the companies pumping it out of the ground, but it also represents a big opportunity for the companies transporting and refining crude oil.

Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  )
Canadian National Railway is one company trying to bail-out Canada's ailing pipelines. In 2010 the company didn't move one carload of crude oil. This year it is expected to "choo-choo" its way to 60,000 carloads of oil from the country. This business in particular has boosted sales and income each year since 2010. Investors have to like that growth and where things are headed in the long term. Canadian National is cutting checks totaling $1.9 billion this year to repair its railways, accommodate growth needs, and purchase new freight cars, including new natural-gas powered models. �

The eConnect tools serve as an electronic bridge between the other elements of its ETM technology platform and its clients' enterprise resource planning (ERP), billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, order management, back office and e-commerce systems. Through eConnect, its clients are able to request shipping services and receive financial and tracking data using their existing systems.

EchoTrak is an Internet-based Web portal, which connects and integrates its clients with ETM. By entering a username and password, its clients are able to enter orders, display historical and active shipments in the ETM system using configurable data entry screens sorted by carrier, price, delivery date, destination and other relevant specifications. EchoTrak also generates automatic alerts to ensure that shipments are moving in accordance with the client specifications and timeline. RateIQ2.0 is a pricing engine, which manages LTL tariffs and generates rate quotes and transit times for LTL shipments. LaneIQ is a pricing engine, which generates rate quotes for TL shipments. LaneIQ also provides integrated tools to manage dispatch, communications, headhaul and backhaul data col! lection a! nd management functions relating to TL shipments. EchoPak is a small parcel pricing and audit engine. For each small parcel shipped, EchoPak audits carrier compliance with on-time delivery requirements and pricing tariffs. In addition, EchoPak tracks information for each parcel and is able to aggregate and analyze that data for clients. For instance, clients are able to view shipments by date, business unit, product line and location, and clients can access information regarding service levels and pricing.

The Company�� Shipment Tracking stores shipment information en-route and after final delivery. The shipment data is acquired through its carrier EDI integration, allowing its clients to track the location and status of all shipments on one screen, regardless of mode or carrier. Final delivery information is permanently archived, allowing it to provide its clients with carrier performance reporting by comparing actual delivery times with the published transit time standards.

Document Imaging allows the Company to store digital images of all shipping documents, including bills of lading and delivery receipts. CAS (Cost Allocation System) automatically audits carrier invoices against its rating engine and accounts payable accrual system. If the amounts match, the invoice is automatically released for payment. If the amounts do not match, the invoice is sent to various administrative personnel for manual processing and resolution. CAS also integrates to its general ledger, accounts receivable and accounts payable systems. Accounting includes its general ledger, accounts receivable and accounts payable functions.     Werner Enterprises (WERN) announced its third quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday, posting a 1% change in revenues from last year’s Q3, but a 15% drop in net income.

    The Omaha, NE-based logistics and transportation company announced Q3 revenue of $511.73 million, which was up slightly from last year’s $506.50 million revenue figure. WERN reported net income for the quarter of $21.53 million, or 29 cents per diluted share, which was down from last year’s Q3 earnings of $25.13 million, or 34 cents per diluted share.

    The company was able to meet analyst views of 29 cents EPS, and slightly surpass the revenue estimate of $503.82 million.

    WERN shares were up 21 cents, or 0.90%, at Thursday’s market close, but were edging lower in after-hours trading. YTD, the company’s stock is up just over 4%.

U.S. stocks fell for the week, sending the Standard & Poor�� 500 Index to its first back-to-back decline since November, as investors speculated the Federal Reserve will consider scaling back stimulus efforts.

Telephone and utility shares helped lead a retreat in companies that offer stable earnings and high dividends as Exelon Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. tumbled at least 5.7 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 187.53 points, or 1.2 percent, to 15,115.57 for the week after hitting an all-time high of 15,409.39 on May 28.

ASC

ASC operates a fleet of United States flagged vessels on the Great Lakes, providing waterborne transportation of dry bulk commodities primarily for customers in the steel, electric utility and construction industries. The primary commodities carried by ASC�� vessels are iron ore, coal, limestone aggregates and metallurgical limestone. End markets for these commodities include domestic automobile manufacturing, electricity generation and non-residential construction. At December 31, 2011, ASC�� fleet consisted of 17 vessels. Fourteen ! of the ve! ssels are diesel powered. The diesel vessels range in size from 635 to 1,004 feet in length with maximum load capacities between 23,800 and 80,900 gross tons. The three remaining vessels are steam powered. The steamer vessels range in size from 690 to 767 feet in length with maximum load capacities between 22,300 and 26,300 gross tons. In 2011, ASC carried 28.4 million net tons of cargo including both contracted volume and spot business.

Portfolio Management

Portfolio Management leverages its equipment knowledge by managing portfolios of assets for third parties. Portfolio Management generates fee and residual sharing income through portfolio administration and remarketing of these assets. Affiliate activities include aircraft spare engine leasing, shipping operations and gas compression equipment leasing. Rolls-Royce and Partners Finance (RRPF) is a collection of 50%-owned domestic and international joint ventures with Rolls-Royce plc, a manufacturer of commercial aircraft jet engines. It develops products designed to meet the needs of specific customer segments, which may include a range of different services and delivery channels. Its customer offerings include deposits and account services; credit and lending, both secured and unsecured, and financial advisory, broking, life insurance manufacturing and asset management.

The Company offers services through four principal channels: branches, self-service terminals, telephone service centres and digital (Internet and mobile). Customers can transact with the bank through a combination of these channels. Its offers include HSBC Premier, HSBC Advance, Wealth Solutions & Financial Planning and Basic Banking. HSBC Premier provide preferential banking services and global recognition to its mass affluent customers and their immediate families. Customers can access emergency travel assistance, priority telephone banking and an online global view of their Premier accounts around the world. HSBC Advance provides a range of preferential products and services to simplify the banking needs of customers and to help them manage and plan their money to achieve their financial goals and ambitions. Wealth Solutions & Financial Planningis a financial planning process designed around individual customer needs to help its clients to protect, grow and manage their wealth through investment and wealth insurance products manufactured by Global Asset Management, Global Markets and HSBC Insurance and by selected third-party providers. Basic Banking provides banking products and services using global product platforms and globally set service standards.

Commercial Banking

The Company segment�� its Commercial Banking Business (CMB) into Corporate, to serve both Corporate and Mid-Market companies, and Business Banking, to serve the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME��) sector. It provides support to companies as they expand both domestically and internationally, and ensures a focus on the busine! ss bankin! g segments. It offers a range of financing, both domestic and cross-border, including overdrafts, receivables finance, term loans and syndicated, leveraged, acquisition and project finance. Asset finance is offered in selected sites. The Company provides the services and finance its clients need throughout the trade cycle including; letters of credit, collections, guarantees; receivables finance; supply chain solutions; commodity and structured finance; and risk distribution. HSBC is supporting the development of renminbi as a trade currency, with renminbi capabilities in more than 50 markets. It is a provider of domestic and cross-border payments, collections, liquidity management and account services offering local, regional and global solutions delivered through e-enabled platforms designed to address the current and future needs of its clients. The Company offers business and financial protection, trade insurance, employee benefits, corporate wealth management and a variety of other commercial risk insurance products in selected countries.

Global Banking and Markets

Global Banking and Markets (GB&M) provides tailored financial solutions to government, corporate and institutional clients and private investors globally. Managed as a global business, GB&M operates a long-term relationship management approach to build a understanding of clients��financial requirements. Sector-focused client service teams consisting of relationship managers and product specialists develop financial solutions to meet individual client needs. GB&M is managed as two principal business lines: Global Markets, and Global Banking.

Global Markets operations consist of treasury and capital markets services. Products include foreign exchange; currency, interest rate, bond, credit, equity and other derivatives; government and non-government fixed income and money market instruments; precious metals and exchange-traded futures; equity services; distribution of capital markets instruments, a! nd securi! ties services, including custody and clearing services and funds administration to both domestic and cross-border investors. Global Banking offers financing, advisory and transaction services. Its products include capital raising, advisory services, bilateral and syndicated lending, leveraged and acquisition finance, structured and project finance, lease finance and non-retail deposit taking; international, regional and domestic payments and cash management services; and trade services for corporate clients.

Global Private Banking

Global Private Banking (GPB) provides investment management and trustee solutions to high net worth individuals and their families globally. Private Banking services consists of multicurrency and fiduciary deposits, account services, and credit and specialist lending. GPB also accesses HSBC�� universal banking capabilities to offer products and services such as credit cards, Internet banking, and corporate and investment banking solutions. Investment Management comprises advisory and discretionary investment services, as well as brokerage across asset classes. This includes a range of investment vehicles, portfolio management, security services and alternatives. Private Trust Solutions comprise trusts and estate planning, designed to protect wealth and preserve it for future generations through structures tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.

    HSBC Holdings PLC (HK:5) � (HSBC) �, the single largest constituent on the Hang Seng Index, fell 0.5% after the bank said it agreed to sell its 8% stake in Bank of Shanghai to Spain�� Banco Santander S.A. (ES:SAN) �. The bank didn�� say how much it was selling the stake for but it valued the holding at $468 million at Sept. 30.
